     I totally agree – the lockdown is totally unsustainable, for many many reasons.

     We, most voluntarily, did it as an initial reply to a threat, and now it is time to modify that extreme pose.

     The threat is substantive, but, not severe – certainly not as originally feared.

   • My sense of this is that the lockdown hasn’t stopped the spread, it was never intended to do so. It was a curve flattening effort to stop the collapse of emergency services. The deaths in ICU are now dropping off precipitously in the UK. That has to mean that its largely run through the population and killed those most suseptable. That’s consistent with every bell curve we’ve ever seen with viruses. It’s consistent with IQ charts and race data etc.

     The lockdown did not stop the spread it just slowed that spread down to a manageable level.

     Gradual easing will happen as people emerge from the rubble rubbing their eyes in the sunlight and the laws will play catch up or be ignored.

2. Definitely worse than the flu. Combine it with economic collapse and the future looks dim.

     And last I checked, the flu doesn’t take away someone’s sense of taste and smell for nearly a month AFTER recovery.

       With respect, in 1999 I, as a healthy non-smoking male, got the flu so bad I had to go to the hospital to have my lungs sprayed so that I could breathe.

       Yes, Covid, is serious, but, not unprecendented.

       The overwhelming majority of hospitalizations have occurred to those not in good health, before they were infected.

       This is not The Black Death, or anything approaching it.

     • I wanted to compare notes. Good job pulling through btw. A post about the sequence of importAnt events and relapses during recovery might be useful. I’ve found that the media do not cover the recovery period which is just as harrowing and uncertain as the decline into acute stages. Please publish a day by day account of how recovery has gone. I’ve either had it or had the nastiest bronchitis in my life. There’s no testing here unless you hospitalise so it’s a been a guessing game with GPs assessing symptoms as you go.

       • I’ll try to write something up this coming week detailing the symptoms and how everything progressed.

         The strange thing for me was how the illness peaked, declined, then peaked again three or four times.

         I’ve never had anything like that with any other respiratory illness in my life – usually it starts, gets bad, fever peaks, then the cough goes dry and dies off.

     • @Marcus, I have a friend who is the head of nursing at a major hospital, prior to taking an administrative position, he was a cardiac nurse, and then in charge of cardiac nursing. From what he tells me, the advice on COVID-19 changes every couple of weeks, and they are not sure what they are dealing with, which in itself is not very reassuring.

     • Marcus- YES. The flu does all those things – and more. Except the taste and small thing for a month. I don’t know any one, who is deathly ill with anything doesn’t necessarily pay attention to taste or odor. When I was sick I forced myself, and my husband, to eat and drink because your body does need fuel, And liquid, to flush out toxins. We ate very simply because preparing elaborate meals was IMPOSSIBLE . Water, juices, water, simple nutritious food, and water water water. I recall textures, more than taste. However – the biology is imprecise, and individual bodies react differently/ The handful of times when I have been HAMMERED on booze – I lose my sense of taste.

       An Italian pal, when I was in college, prepared a HUGE Italian meal for a group of us – at approx 3AM . We had been out clubbing and dancing, but were wide awake. I get drunk on one beer – I am a total lightweight when it comes to booze – and I probably had a drink an hour, over a period of 4 or 5 hours. I normally get very sleepy after a drink. We had been club hopping an dancing all night – and …ahhhh…other “energy boosters” were involved, shall we say? I was HAMMERED – but wide awake.

       So was every one else. And we were hungry. we were going to go look for an all night restaurant – but our pal suggested we go to his place. He grandmother has sent him a lot of home-made “gravy” – tomato sauce – and he could whip up pasta in no time. His room-mate was Italian as well, and was on board. Now Eye-tie Roomie 2, who was one of my best pals, whispered that the red gravy – sauce – was bland and awful. So while Eye-tie Pal 1 was making salads and pasta, Best Pal Eye Tie 2 and I were doctoring up the sauce with spices and chunks of veggies like inions and carrots and spices and herbs. Eye tie 1 knew what were were up to, and was bitching – but we were ALL hammered and he couldn’t stop us. (Ha! I used to have so much fun!) Anyway – we finally sat down to eat at around 4AM. Apparently the food was GREAT. I couldn’t taste anything. EyeTie 1 made a wonderful salad. I knew there were all kinds of yummy things in it. But I couldn’t TASTE anything. I could FEEL the tomatoes and onions in the sauce; the textures and density, and all the wonderful ingredients of the salad, as I chewed – but I couldn’t TASTE anything. I commented on this weird effect as I ate. No ne cared because it was 4AM and every one was drunk, hungry, and getting sleepy. But I knew it was cuz of the booze.

       Another time, a few years later, after college, I held a dinner party for friends, when I lived in DC. I liked to simmer meats in booze when I cooked. (The Hubby is a teetotaler, so alas, this element is no more). Red wines for red meats, and white for fish. I was making some type of sea fish, and bought a small split of champagne, in which to simmer the fish. After I got the fish started, I poured myself a glass of champagne, because I didn’t need much for the fish, and decided not to waste [it]. I diced some onion, threw in a little shredded orange peel, and then I don’t remember ANYTHING else I added to the fish. or cooked, for that matter. I know I added a few other spices and food elements – but it’s a total blank. Oh – I didn’t black out or pass out – I just don’t remember anything else I cooked. I don’t get dysfunctional when I get blotto. My friends came for dinner – and told me that the fish was THE MOST delicious fish they ever had, and wanted to know the recipe. I told my pals – who knew me – that I was blotto and had no idea what was in the fish, after the champagne, diced, sauteed onion, and orange peel. Jokes abounded. I of, course, told them I was delighted everything turned out well – but I couldn’t taste a thing.

       So that’s an anomaly particular to me. Perhaps the fact that you took so long to regain your sense of taste and smell is particular to you. As to the rest of your manifestations – I won’t disgrace myself of this sight be relating the humiliations the Type A flu inflicted on myself and my husband, during the course of the illness. It was DISGUSTING, but very interesting and instructive,

   • The cases of death in ICU in NHS hospitals are dwindling quite a bit now. The peak of ICU death deaths was reached around the 8th April. If this is a normal virus with a. Bell curve distribution its almost certainly done all the damage it can do in the UK at this point. If it defies bell curve distribution it is just about buying time. Given ts both Sweden and the UK have similar infection and deaths and different officlal rules (widely flouted) I think it’s blown through the population and killed 80% of turly suseptable people already.

Cuomo did and California did mass testing. The real Corona appears to have already widely spread, so the lockdown is not making any difference. There was a point when sealing off China and nations allowing Chinamen in was feasible. That has passed. Based on the real numbers in Iceland, California, and Cuomo’s last speech, we have widespread infection which cannot be stopped by lockdown, and the death rate is anywhere from 0.008% to 0.01 to 0.03% depending on if you want to take low or high estimates. This means Corona is no worse than the flu mortality wise, but spreads 3x quicker. However we have missed the window to lockdown travel from China. You need to stop pushing the lies and panic, and stop quoting sicko’s like Gill Bates in your attempt to act like Michael Shermer and be Mr. Skeptic. If this lockdown merely flattening the curve I suppose it’s largely blown through the population that can die from this in the UK.       • It’s a new virus, or at least one we’ve only developed a test for very recently. One we don’t have any experience to treat or cure or inoculate. But it still should operate on a bell curve with deaths and infections. And it has.

        Now, I would suggest that people do on fact change their habits. Quit smoking less drinking more fitness, less close contact more hygiene,no huggy freely bullshit anymore more work from home, more gloves, no cruises temperature checks and quarantine for flights more masks etc.

        But I do suspect that it has blown through the UK already as a lethal threat. Doctors are getting a handle on it to some extent and it must have killed most of the truly suseptable at this point.

        A lot of people are in fact going around their business informally already and key workers must have almost all been infected by now.

          • Technically it has but its been widely flouted. Also the lockdown is not stopping the spread only slowing it. Or flattening it.

            The fact that hospital deaths are lowering is a good indication of a drop off in infection well beyond any social laws.

            I don’t think there’s a change in the official laws until middle of May anyway but the crisis is in hand. Its manageable now.

    Some people “recover” and don’t seem to have antibodies when tested. “Herd immunity” is impossible if there is no immunity. Better not to be exposed at all.
