  1. Don’t think this is the opinion of an American lawyer. Get that disclaimer out of the way. If I’m wrong, please correct.

    Trump can only directly pardon Chauvin of his Federal convictions. I don’t know if he got any based on the incident with George Floyd. But I do know that in the heat of the news and controversy, the IRS started sniffing and found something. He already did plead out to that while he was in jail waiting on the more critical state charges.

    However, the DOJ can look into the way that the Minnesota state trial against him was carried out, for due process concerns. It would take a successful DOJ lawsuit in federal court against the state and judges finding for the DOJ and overturning the convictions.

    Tim Walz certainly isn’t going to pardon Chauvin. Certainly nobody that could get elected the governor in that state will, not even a Republican.
