Donald Trump’s 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico Take Effect

“Nothing ever happens.”

This was actually a popular meme last year.

The country felt like it was comatose during the Biden presidency even with the wars raging in Gaza, Lebanon and Ukraine. The wars are winding down now, but it feels like we are speeding up.

USA Today:

“Canada and China swiftly announced retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. on Tuesday, shortly after long-threatened levies by the Trump administration on those countries and Mexico took effect.

President Donald Trump’s new 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada were imposed at 12:01 a.m. ET, along with a doubling of duties on some Chinese goods to 20%.

Trump’s moves effectively launched new trade conflicts with the United States’ top three trading partners and threatened to upend two-way annual trade worth nearly $2.2 trillion in 2024, according to data from the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. The tit-for-tat tariffs have rattled global markets. …”

So many things are happening now that no one is able to keep up!

  1. I remember when China placed huge tariffs on Australian wine and seafood after we called for a proper investigation into the origins of covid(they didn’t do it with iron ore, suprise, surprise). Suddenly, I was able to buy wonderful seafood at much reduced prices due to extra availability. I was hoping our exporters would find other market’s to reduce reliance on China. They did, to a degree, but eventually, things settled down unfortunately. They still get our best food and beverages plus our natural resources, and we still get their cheap crap.

  2. Events are occurring, but not all of them are positive.

This slap fight with our neighbors over tariffs are no better than the fable of “the little Dutch boy” who tried to hold back the leaks of water from a dike by using his fingers.

Historically awful things happened during the so-called Biden administration but that is just were America is at. The inertia of bad decisions domestically and internationally are coming home to roost.
