Few, if any, in the modern world know what Christianity is. I disagree with this assessment. It is true that the number of soldiers drawn from the legions in Italy dropped. It’s not that Italians couldn’t fight anymore, it’s just that Italians were increasingly outnumbered and replaced by Slaves and unhealthy Plebian dependents. But the Italians didn’t disappear. They simply moved elsewhere around the Empire. When you read of Emperors being from Libya or Syria, it wasn’t that they were actually Libyans or Syrians, it’s they were Italians settled in Italian colonies. The Italians dominated the Empire until near its very end.
It is true the demographics did change in Italy as the large Italian population moved out to the provinces and replaced by non Italian slaves. We see in this in burisl genetics as the moved from Italian to Levant, Egypt, and North Africa. Still, the top class remained mostly Italian. In the end, as the Empire collapsed, large numbers of Italians returned to Italy. I disagree. I wrote elsewhere why. It’s not the liberalism necessarily of our age, but there were liberals along the same line as today, as well as conservatives. Read the political and actual battles between the Optimates (conservative) and the Plebs (liberal) during the Republic. It was pagan Rome which had jettisoned republicanism when the Roman Republic fell under Caesar. Pagan Greece created constitutions and democracy and egalitarian forms of government which never existed in the Byzantine Empire. Monarchy, aristocracy and serfdom dominated Christian Europe for a thousand years until republicanism was revived in the Renaissance. Julius Caesar was assassinated out of fear that he was setting himself up as a king.

There were censuses of the Romans and compilations of populations in the provinces finally archeology also has filled some gaps. The fact is Romans were a minority population except in Italy, and even there thru the centuries of using slave and immigrant cheap labor by the Big Business elite of their era, they effed themselves. The Roman religion was for the Romans. They were only at most 30-35% of the Empire. All citizens of Rome had to give submission to the ways of the ancestors, unless one was naturalized and a Jew or some other protected class like St Paul. The later only had to give respect to the Roman ways and obiesence only to the Emperor. The later was ultimately divinized to give central authority over a very multi national Empire, in which the subjects were allowed to keep their own religions. When you have what in essence was globalism, and you allow even the barest of trade to serve the ruling population you get movement of people throughout the system. This is what happened with Rome itself as more and more foreigners were allowed to set up distinct quarters in the city protected by the City fathers i.e. the Senate. By the 200s Rome the city was very Semeticized and Hellenized. But for the Celts, and later Germans it would’ve been heavily non White. We see this in genetic testing.

Ultimately, the only way the Romans couldve maintained their identity was by a stronger segregationist policy together with focused aassimilationist policies that would have a chance of success like with the Illyrians, Gauls, Britons, Hispanians, in the West and perhaps with the Greeks in the East. But even then it would have to have been gradual. Instead you had Emperors like Caracala as I recall, decide to simply give citizenship to everybody thereby opening up the numbers of recruits and taxes for the Imperial regime. Overall it must be understood the Roman religion was a Nativist religion like the Judean religion. On the other hand it was more welcoming of people to enter its protection unlike the Jews. When this was married to a state imperial enterprise, it led to the slow universalization and finally dissolation of it amongst the global empire. Nonetheless, it did succeed in also dissolving the other religions around it, the Greek, Jews, and Christians excepted. The process took centuries and well into the early middle ages the ways of the ancestors of other peoples were still followed to a degree in the countryside leading to the then Christian elite to call their customs, paganism, which means the country folk ways. Ironically, that’s where the old Roman religion ended up.

The Byzantines had a few good generations of thriving after the fall of Rome, but it suffered badly as the Sick Man of Christendom in the last centuries of its existence, usually incapable of coping with the Islamic juggernaut that tore through its territory with a lot of impunity. To be fair, they did a pretty good job all things considered. The Byzantines aka Eastern Romans existed for 1,000 years after the fall of Rome. It was the most advanced state in Christiandom until the late Middle Ages. While it stood it allowed the West to recover protected by the Hispania peninsula and the Pyeness at one end and the Bosperous and Constantinople at the other end.
During that time it was outnumbered against all the powers of the East and the Steppe. It had to fight Pechenegs and others of the Steppe on one end and Arabs and Persians on the other. After the catastrophe of the Plague and the Sassinads it basically stood alone facing the entirety of Islam.
From about 800 AD until the 1000s it was on the offensive going almost as far as Jerusalem and into Iran, crushed the Pechenegs and recovered all of the Balkans and Anatolia. You are right though about unity. Competing geopolitical conflicts between Eastern and Western Christians, dynastic struggles, and the continued demands by the Papacy that the Eastern Christians submit to his authority kept true coordination from occurring.
Nonetheless, but for the Byzantines standing to the East, the rest of Europe wouldve fallenna couple of times to either the Steppe, the Moslems, or both. In fact the Turks went on after conquering Constantinople to invade Central Europe. But by then, the Western Europeans had recovered and eventually drove the Turks back despite their own incessent wars especially the religious wars of the Counter Reformation.

Roman ursury was the penultimate apex of power in the Roman Empire. It was centered on the Roman Senate. All Senators were non Jews. Some Senators were Christian. It didn’t become majority Christian until probably the late 400s. So, Roman usury was really Roman.
This concentration of social, economic, and political power in the Senate was the cause of the Roman Republic Civil Wars to begin with and was never permanently solved. Yes you are mostly correct. However, it isn’t monolithic. In Europe, the Jews are much more conservative than in the Anglosphere. The Jews outside of the US in the Anglosphere are also more conservative than the ones in the US.

Here we mapped our Ashkenazi Jewish as primarily Italian (ITA, 68%), followed by Levantine (LEV, 16.6%), Iraqi, Iranian, Caucasian & Turkish (ICT, 7.2%), Greek & Balkan (GBK, 2.4%) and Eastern European (EAE, 1.7%). This largely agrees with several reports based on both modern and medieval Ashkenazi Jewish DNA.
To address this, we have developed Orchestra, a LAI model that can account for the genetic heterogeneity in recently admixed populations. Orchestra can work with reference panels made of many combined datasets. It is able to accurately retrace demographic histories of complex admixed populations, such as Latin Americans, and does so on a fine-grained regional scale. Further, Orchestra can be used to elucidate relationships between different populations. We offer a new lens into the ongoing debate about the origins of the Ashkenazi Jewish, supporting strong genetic ties to the Italian Peninsula.
The close genetic resemblance to Italians accords with the historical presumption that Ashkenazi Jews started their migrations across Europe in Italy and with historical evidence that conversion to Judaism was common in ancient Rome.
EEJ seem to be mainly Italian (Roman) in origin, which is easily understood, considering the historical evidence presented above.
