We’re currently debating Nietzsche’s argument that the aristocratic and martial spirit of Rome was snuffed out by the poisonous slave morality of Christianity which made us weak and decadent. I blame modern liberalism for the things that White Nationalist pagans blame on Christianity.

Few, if any, in the modern world know what Christianity is. It goes on to discuss how the Byzantines used excruciating methods to torture people for centuries. Belisarius conquered the Vandals in North Africa and destroyed Italy in the Gothic Wars against the Ostrogoths. He would have succeeded in reconquering most of the West if he had not been stopped by the Plague.
In my early twenties, I read Nietzsche and was initially impressed, but as I learned more and my understanding of history deepened I quickly discarded his views. The Late Romans continued to produce excellent generals like Aetius, Majorian and Belisarius. The Western Roman Empire defeated the Huns which had conquered Germanic Europe and triggered the refugee crisis which eventually overwhelmed the West. The Eastern Roman Empire, which was also Christian, endured for another thousand years. Italy was destroyed by the vicious warfare of the Gothic Wars. The Byzantines excelled in torture and were not weak Christian pacifists. Byzantine emperors were absolute monarchs and carried on Roman traditions. It was pagan Rome which had jettisoned republicanism when the Roman Republic fell under Caesar. Pagan Greece created constitutions and democracy and egalitarian forms of government which never existed in the Byzantine Empire. Monarchy, aristocracy and serfdom dominated Christian Europe for a thousand years until republicanism was revived in the Renaissance. Julius Caesar was assassinated out of fear that he was setting himself up as a king.

As a historian, I had briefly heard of this event, but thought it occurred in a theater and not a public spectacle and was a very random event. I was unaware of the sheer brutality of it which is horrendous. Yes, there were some deeply dark and twisted things in the Byzantine Empire. It ultimately proved fatal to it as thesenthings ate at the heart of his civilizational soul and made it difficult to fight against Islam and it’s many enemies. It should be a salutory lesson for us to not make the same mistakes.
