I’m a strong supporter of Universal Basic Income.
Universal Basic Income and Universal Maximum Income were our ideas. They were part of Sen. Huey Long’s “Share Our Wealth” platform during the Great Depression. It was also populists, not progressives, who came up with ideas like Social Security, free college tuition, the income tax and regulating corporations. “Every Man a King” meant providing EVERYONE with a basic income.
“A program to give $500 monthly checks to low-income families of color in Oakland, California, has been criticized for explicitly excluding the 10,000 white residents living in poverty in the city.
The lottery system, funded by private philanthropists, will see the no-strings-attached checks go to households with an annual income of less than $59,000 if they have at least one child. The other half of the $500 checks will go to those earning under $30,000.
According to data from an Oakland Equity Indicators Report, cited by officials to justify favoring people of color, white households earn about three times that of African-American ones. …”
Why not inject Ibram X. Kendi’s toxic nonsense into the basic income debate though?
“(CNN) – Low-income families of color in Oakland, California, could receive some extra financial assistance over the next year and a half.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced this week that the city will launch a guaranteed income project to give hundreds of Black and Indigenous families and people of color $500 per month for 18 months.
The project’s payments will be unconditional, and recipients may spend the money however they choose.
The Oakland Resilient Families program is the latest trial of a “guaranteed income” system of wealth distribution, where residents are given a set amount of money per month to supplement the existing social safety net. …”
Leave it to progressives to take an old populist idea and ruin it.
They’re already ruined Social Justice, which used to be broadly popular because it meant economic fairness, and associated it with toxic lib shit like political correctness and wokeness. This is why the Democrats have been steadily shrinking in the Senate into a party of arrogant coastal elites. Nothing can get done because their brand is too culturally toxic in rural states. It has gotten so bad that they had to use budget reconciliation to pass a bill with 80% public support to give people free money.
Note: Even giving people free money is unlikely to improve their perception of the Democrats because they are too strongly associated with elitism, censorship, open borders and political correctness.
