In my corner of the woods (I’m in southern Portugal) when I was small kid, Africans from the ex-colonies where rare enough to be considered a curiosity. Nowadays, there’s whole neighborhoods of the things. There’s nary a cafe in my hometown that doesn’t host anything from a trio to a multitude of Africans at any given time of day, particularly when there’s a big soccer game on TV.
There’s this tiny cafe I used to cater to when my local one had a fire. It has cheap prices and is run by an elderly white couple. I swear, the first time I visited the white couple raised their eyebrows in disbelief, the place was packed to the brim with blacks I must have been their first native white patron in weeks. I bet the owner was mentally measuring the size of my stones, or questioning my sanity in going there. In subsequent visits I was always received with a smile, I think they were *relieved* to have a white local drop by once in awhile.
Our local variety is fresh out of Africa and quite pure. You don’t have to be an anthropologist to notice most have all the features in prominence, the very dark skin (even for a negro), huge lips, jutting jaw, etc. You should hear them babble among themselves in their patois, makes ebonics sound like BBC English.
Fortunately, they are nowhere near as aggressive as the North American kind. I think the memories of two decades of African colonial wars remind them of what we were once capable of doing.
