This excerpt on the demise of segregation in Montgomery is from J. Mills Thornton III’s Dividing Lines: Municipal Politics and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma:
“The events surrounding the bombings and the trial and acquittal of the first two of the men indicted for them had the effect of completely silencing modern white opinion in Montgomery. It was not to be heard from again for four years. During the years from 1957 to 1961, the city slipped into a surreal dimension in which only extremist views were publicly voiced among whites, and any hint of deviation from white supremacist orthodoxy would incur both active harassment and social ostracism. As the open expression of white moderate opinion disappeared, the apparent uniformity of segregationist convictions encouraged the peculiar notion among segregationist true believers that they were winning – and winning precisely because they were succeeding in preventing any cracks from forming in the solid white phalanx.”
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision in Browder v. Gayle, the NAACP lawsuit which arose out of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and which declared that bus segregation in Montgomery was “unconstitutional,” the local DWL population was silenced for years by the strength of the White Citizens’ Council.
Ultimately, the White Citizens’ Council lost the war to preserve the Jim Crow system, not because White Montgomery was converted to integration, but simply because the existence of the Union ensured that Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court and the majority of non-White Southerners that controlled those institutions would have the final say in the matter.
Note: We’re going through the same process again today with gay marriage, gun control, and amnesty for illegal aliens … the existence of the Union guarantees the eventual defeat of the conservative side on these issues.
Yes, Sir! At every turn the glorious union is there to crush the States and people with equality, followed in ten years by idiot Republitards and Zio-christians cheering it as an edict from God Almighty and shutting down any dissent.
During the French Revolution, there were two radical left parties, the Girondins and the Jacobins, no conservative party at all. The Girondens were eventually destroyed ny the even more leftist Jacobins. That is what we have today with the Democrats and Republicans.
The 50s 60s 70s were the golden years for U.S. while Europe was rebuilding from the war. Birth of a middle class portray in the movie ‘Pleasantville’.
“the existence of the Union ensured that Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court and the majority of non-White Southerners that controlled those institutions would have the final say in the matter.”
A majority of no one controls those institutions. The corporate elites do right from picking who gets to teach kindergarten, who gets on TV, and who gets on the primary ballots. You think we have democracy and public consensus in this country? You are naive to the point of being embarrassing.
“Birth of a middle class portray in the movie ‘Pleasantville’.”
Modern middle class life goes back to the 19th Century and the Industrial Revolution. The working class got to join in via the general prosperity and high wages after WWII. Pleasantville was an insidious Hollywood Jew attack on its memory. George Lucas got it more right in American Graffiti. Vietnam was the beginning of the end. Real wages haven’t increased much since the 1970’s and have been going down in recent years.
