I heard on MSNBC that Mercer left behind a “multi-page hate-filled note” at the crime scene. I can’t help but wonder if his manifesto will ever see the light of day or whether it will be hidden from the public like Vester Flanagan’s “race war” manifesto in August.
We already know that Mercer admired Vester Flanagan:

In a blog linked to that identity, Harper-Mercer expressed admiration for Roanoke shooter Vester Flanagan.
People “like him have nothing left to live for,” Harper-Mercer wrote on Aug. 31. “On an interesting note, I have noticed that so many people like him are all alone and unknown, yet when they spill a little blood, the whole world knows who they are… A man who was known by no one, is now known by everyone. His face splashed across every screen, his name across the lips of every person on the planet, all in the course of one day. Seems the more people you kill, the more you’re in the limelight.”
Multiple witnesses have told the media that Mercer singled out Christians:
“Witnesses told Roseburg’s local paper, the News-Review, and CNN that Mercer asked students in the classroom he entered to stand up and state their religion.
According to CNN, victim Anastasia Boylan told her father before she went into surgery that Mercer said to the students who identified as Christian, “‘Good, because you’re a Christian, you’re going to see God in just about one second.'”
So, a mixed-race black mass shooter has executed nine Christians in an obvious hate crime in Oregon. Where are the Hatewatchers at the SPLC now? They had a lot to say when Dylann Roof murdered nine people in Charleston. Surprisingly, they had nothing to say about the jihadist Muhammad Abdulazeez or Vester Flanagan’s race war.

This story is really missing some pieces. It makes little sense to ask people’s religion in an area where essentially everyone is Christian. Or is there some pocket of other religions in the area that could explain why the guy was asking people if they were Christian? Did anyone answer some other religion and was spared?

In 27 comments there are approx 6 comments about Jews. Four are antisemitic. Comments such as Christine’s make a valid point. If he had been asking for Jews & killing them it would be double the coverage, at least. But ditto if he was shooting Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Mormons, etc., it would be the same double plus coverage.
It is unfair and outrageous, but is a pattern in the US probably related to a “majority killing off minority” perception. Within that context it has a more terrifying ring to it. And don’t forget the common complaint in the Black community about the disparity in reaction when, e.g., a White girl disappears vs. a Black girl.

Is this Abraham Lincoln vitriol based solely upon his prosecuting the Civil War, or are there some rational arguments being made? The race-hate stuff is not worth reading, esp. since Lincoln was by no means committed to an anti-slavery position well into 1862. One could look at some of the excessive powers he exercised such as suspending Habeus writs, ignoring losing on the issue at the Supreme Court, choosing to expand Executive Powers via the blockade (upheld only 5-4 in the Prize Cases decision), etc.
On the other hand, he was willing to do what was necessary to preserve the Union and create the “United States”. It’s also hard to criticize Lincoln on sins of excessive power when the South was engaging in the sin of slavery. The buying and selling of human beings based on skin color is something I learned when very young was nothing about which any Southerner ought to be proud.
