President Trump Imposes $100,000 Fee Per Year on H-1B Visas

It will suffice to say that Trump has had it with India.

This comes after Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Indian goods.

Reuters:

“SAN FRANCISCO/WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) – The Trump administration said on Friday it would ask companies to pay $100,000 per year for H-1B worker visas, prompting some big tech companies to warn visa holders to stay in the U.S. or quickly return.

The change could deal a big blow to the technology sector that relies heavily on skilled workers from India and China.

Since taking office in January, Trump has kicked off a wide-ranging immigration crackdown, including moves to limit some forms of legal immigration. The step to reshape the H-1B visa program represents his administration’s most high-profile effort yet to rework temporary employment visas. …”

As with everything Trump has done, this will be predictably challenged in court though. Once again, it will show that the problem is less with Trump than the courts and Congress.

  1. The darker secret behind h1b visas is its use as a way for mega-employers to drive down wages of US workers, ‘if you won’t write apps for 30$/ hour I’ll just have to get someone from India’.
Even if the Indian employee can’t do the job, the mere threat is a powerful point to drive down wages, negotiating with intimidation.

That’s true as far as it goes. Trump could of course do an Andrew Jackson and respond to the blackrobed Philosophah-Kangz with a direct quote: The court has made their decision. Now let them enforce it.”

Such a step is not in TACO-man’s nature though.
