Vivek Ramaswamy: What Is an American?

Are you excited to vote in the 2026 midterms?

New York Times:

“There are two competing visions now emerging on the American right, and they are incompatible. One vision of American identity is based on lineage, blood and soil: Inherited attributes matter most. The purest form of an American is a so-called heritage American — one whose ancestry traces back to the founding of the United States or earlier.

This view is now popularized by the Groyper right, a rapidly ascendant online movement that argues for the creation of a white-centric identity. This is a predictable response — one that I anticipated in my 2022 book, “Nation of Victims” — to anti-white discrimination over the last half-decade, and it is no longer just a fringe viewpoint.

The alternative (and, in my view, correct) vision of American identity is based on ideals.

Americanness isn’t a scalar quality that varies based on your ancestry. It’s binary: Either you’re an American or you’re not. You are an American if you believe in the rule of law, in freedom of conscience and freedom of expression, in colorblind meritocracy, in the U.S. Constitution, in the American dream, and if you are a citizen who swears exclusive allegiance to our nation.

As Ronald Reagan quipped, you can go to live in France, but you can’t become a Frenchman; but anyone from any corner of the world can come to live in the United States and become an American. No matter your ancestry, if you wait your turn and obtain citizenship, you are every bit as American as a Mayflower descendant, as long as you subscribe to the creed of the American founding and the culture that was born of it. This is what makes American exceptionalism possible …”

Hell would freeze over before I would vote for Vivek Ramaswamy.

Fortunately, that scenario is not a bridge that I would have to cross here in Alabama in 2026, but it illustrates where we are at in Late MAGA due to Trump’s dismal endorsements.

Note: Instead of sitting out the election in disgust, you should consider voting against Vivek in the primary.

  1. I guess Donald Trump decided to take advice from True Conservative Inc. and endorse a smarmy little conman like Vivek Ramaswamy for governor to deflect blowback over his (truthful) comments about shithole countries.

OR there is a payoff for all of these when he leaves office after collecting no salary as president.

  2. What is an American? Someone with a direct male ancestor listed in the 1790 Census, with a special dispensation for descendants of Frenchmen from the Louisiana Purchase and Spaniards from the purchase of Florida and the Gulf Coast. Anyone else is a guest or an invader.

  3. Why are altrighters upset? Vivek is right. He is restating the great Confederate criticism but in brown form. America was always a rootless proposition nation. America was always liberal. It was always meant to be an escape from history, culture, and roles. America was never meant to be a white supremacist country. If it were, the Founders would have written it that way. Instead, they all opposed slavery and assumed inevitable desegregation and mixing. That is why America was always hostile to Europe, the white homeland, from the get go. America perfectly encapsulates in government form the universalism, transracialism and indeed transsexualism of Christianity; not black and white, or man and woman, but souls.

Our problem is that we and those before us were too scared to face up to the facts of our anti-Americanism. Even today, otherwise long time anti-Americans like the traitorous Richard Spencer want to reimagine America as secretly based. No, it never was and never will be. America was founded exactly to encourage the post-war order. That is why we inevitably entered those wars. That is why we expanded and brown’d ourselves already in the 19th century. None of this was a coincidence. All of it was downstream from the basic intention of America; all children before God via god given, absolute rights. The “isolationism” of the immediate Washington administration, which almost immediately vanished after entering office, was always a tactical fraud at odds with the inherently interventionist claims of America’s own constitution. You can’t say all humans everywhere and all time are equal and then think you can remain cloistered in your little island.

  4. Don’t worry, Wallace, the Republicucks will soon be running wahmen and negroes for political offices in Sweet Home Alabammy just like they are now doing all across Dixie.
