Obviously, race isn’t the foundation of identity. It was a marker of American identity that grew out of the conditions of settlement in the New World. White identity didn’t exist in Roman times or Medieval times. Antiracism didn’t exist either. The Romans never felt any sense of White solidarity with their Germanic neighbors when they were pagan or after they became Christians. The Vikings never felt any sense of White solidarity with the victims of their raids or with the slaves they sold to Arabs.
