In 2025, Trump dismantled the refugee resettlement program and reserved the remaining slots for White South Africans. It was one of his most significant and unquestionable wins. We gave him credit for it. He also ended Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans. The Supreme Court twice sided with the Trump administration which cleared the way for their removal to Venezuela.
Today, Kristi Noem said that the Venezuelans who lost Temporary Protected Status can now apply to be treated as refugees. Trump has also said that we will be running this albatross for the foreseeable future. Venezuela has produced one of the world’s largest refugee crises and the largest in the hemisphere. The future of the country is a black box. It could easily collapse into a failed state.
90% of the 8 million or so Venezuelan refugees live in Colombia, Peru and other Latin American countries, not the United States. Noem is throwing out the welcome mat for them.

The US government was offering a 50 million dollar reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest. Maduro was betrayed by elements in Venezuelan society. Those elements want to immigrate to America. It is probably safer to come over here.

Granted, the US probably had a lot to do with that, but you don’t get tons of refugees and criminal organizations taking over governmental functions in a well-ordered society. It wasn’t Somalia-level, but let’s not pretend it was Denmark or something. Its neighbors were all pretty fed up with the situation there.
My knee-jerk reaction to the Venezuela thing was revulsion, but if you say “let’s worry about our own backyard instead of getting into misadventures on the other side of the globe”, this is what it looks like. Venezuela is/was a center of influence for our geopolitical adversaries (i.e., China, Russia) in our hemisphere. I’m sure it’s also making other Central/South American countries think hard about where their true interests lie.
The whole thing could turn into an ugly boondoggle – and China and Russia have every incentive to ensure that it does – but I suspect Trump’s aims will be more achievable than most of our other recent misadventures. He doesn’t care about bringing “Democracy™” to Venezuela, he just wants to put in someone who will listen to the US.
I see this as sort of a bad sign, since it means the Neocons have his ear (and that Rubio probably hasn’t changed much), but I’m less upset than I initially was. I agree it was politically dumb, since almost no one cares about Venezuela. We’ll see how it turns out, I suppose.
