Trump deserves credit for getting the border under control and gutting the refugee resettlement program. At the same time, “mass deportations” haven’t happened, construction of the border wall has been too slow and the theatrical standoffs with caped libtards in sanctuary cities is burning up too much political capital. Legal immigration including H-1B visas has been cut, but Trump is selling U.S. citizenship with his Gold Card program and Congress has doubled H-2B visas for Big Ag. Congress and the Trump administration have also refused to crackdown on employers of illegal aliens. No permanent changes have been made to our immigration system which can’t be reversed by the next Democratic president.
Trump’s highly visible interior enforcement has successfully bluffed would-be migrants into cancelling or delaying their plans, because it seems plausible that Trump might actually escalate to a real mass deportation, in which case the cost of migrating will be wasted.
If Trump doesn’t continue to escalate enforcement, if he lets it be known that 2025 levels of interior enforcement will never increase, then illegal immigration will recommence. That is what happened in 2017 when would-be migrants concluded that Trump’s talk of mass deportation was a bluff.
