What is Third Worldism?
Imagine a corrupt, geriatric African dictator who is the leader of a cult of personality like Mobutu Sese Seko of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He lives in a gilded palace called Gbadolite in the equatorial jungle where he presides over a country that is being looted by his cronies. The standard of living of the average Congolese citizen is rapidly deteriorating. The currency is becoming worthless.
Instead of addressing his country’s mounting real problems, Mobutu renamed his country Zaire. He renamed the Congo River which became the Zaire River. He renamed major cities like Léopoldville, Stanleyville, Elisabethville as Kinshasa, Kisangani and Lubumbashi. The point of renaming these places was to whip up national pride, flex his own power and remake the country in his image.
Note: We’re 68 days from the midterm elections and Trump is thinking out loud on national television about renaming the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
