Speaking of the Kiplingesque remnants of empire, the Canadian government released the ethnic data from the 2011 census today. Canada is 76.6% white, 19.1% visible minorities (non-Europeans), and 4.3% aboriginal.
This is down from 87% white in 1996, 83.3% in 2001, and 80.1% in 2006. So Canada is browning even faster than the US, mainly due to an immigration rate at least twice that of the US on a per capita basis, and partly because of lower white birthrates in Canada compared to the US.
20.6% of Canada’s population are immigrants, compared to only 12.9% in the US. Here are the top ten immigrant source countries from 2006 to 2011:

This is the first time that Mexico has cracked the top ten, very different from the situation in the US. Latin Americans make up only 1.2% of Canada’s population, compared to “Hispanics” at 18% in the States.
Blacks make up 2.9% of Canada’s population (42% of them in metro Toronto) compared to 13% in the US. So while the percentage of blacks and Latinos is much smaller in Canada, the percentage of Asians and aboriginals is much higher.
60% of visible minorities live in just two metro areas, Toronto and Vancouver, while more than 60% of aboriginals live in the North and West. Here are the percentage of whites in the various provinces and territories:

Nova Scotia: 91.1%
New Brunswick: 94.6%
Quebec: 87.2%

Winnipeg: 69.3%

Quebec City must be easily the whitest metro area of its size (just under 800,000) in North America. It makes me wonder what the whitest US metro area over 500,000 would be: Madison? Des Moines? Omaha?
When it comes to religion, 67.3% of Canadians profess to be Christian, of whom more than half, or 38.7% are Roman Catholics. Other groups rank as follows:
Muslims: 3.2%
Hindus: 1.5%
Sikhs: 1.4%
Buddhists: 1.1%
Jews: 1%
Other religions: 0.6%
No religion: 23.9%
So while the percentage of Catholics, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists are considerably higher in Canada than in the US, the percentage of Protestants and Jews are much lower.
With regards to ethnicity, the white populations of the US and Canada (minus Quebec) are very similar: mostly Northwest Europeans with sizable minorities of Southern and Eastern Europeans. One notable difference is that more white Canadians are of British, and especially Scottish descent, while more white Americans are of German and Irish descent.

Things to keep in mind about Canada. Total population is only 34 and a half million compared to our 300+ million. Its also a very rural place.
North and West in Canada, especially North, means rural areas where a lot of aboriginal villages are located.
The only city I have been to in Canada is Edmonton, and I drove through it at night, but the streets looked really clean.

Statistics Canada, if you can believe it, doesn’t actually publish any data about whites. The percentage of whites can only be calculated by subtracting the percentages of visible minorities and aboriginals (the two are mutually exclusive; definitions of each group are at the site) from the total population.
For some of the metro area data, I had to get out the calculator and figure out the percentages of abos and vismins (and hence, whites) myself. There are a few interesting facts about the white population that I’ve yet to figure out. For example, 60% of the growth of the total white population between 1996 and 2006 came from just one province: Alberta. Also, even though metro Toronto was about 1.5 million people larger than metro Montreal, Montreal actually had a larger white population as of 2006.
And in the most damning indictment of multiculturalism I can think of, the total white populations of metro Toronto and metro Vancouver (the two metros with the highest percentage of visible minorities by far) actually fell during the 1996-2006 time period. That is, whites left the metro areas–not just the central cities–of two of the fastest-growing metros in the country as immigrants flooded in. The only other metros where the white population fell were smaller, economically depressed cities in the boondocks like St John, Saguenay and Thunder Bay, so this was clearly a case of white flight writ large in the face of a massive non-white influx.
I’ve yet to see if these trends have continued into 2011, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. The problem with StatsCan is that they have absolutely no interest in publicizing these undeniable facts, but the ugly truth is there to see for anyone willing to crunch the numbers.
Alberta is a conservative (by Canadian standards), energy producing province.

These census results are more devastating than I would have thought. With the caveat that the 2006 ethnic data was mandatory while the 2011 data was voluntary, in that 5 year period the number of visible minorities grew by 1,196,650, aboriginals grew by 227,895, and whites *fell* by 185,122. So long, Great White North.
I’m not 100% on this, but I believe the white population fell in every province except for Alberta, where it grew by about 42,000. The white population grew slightly in the metro areas of Calgary and Edmonton, was stagnant in Toronto and Vancouver, and fell in Montreal. Despite that, and despite the fact that Toronto outnumbered Montreal by nearly 1.8 million, Montreal still has the largest white population in Canada.

Besides, it’s apples vs. oranges. WWI trenches were an aberration. Europe enjoyed a general peace from the time of the Congress of Vienna (1815) until the start of the war. There were wars and revolutions in Europe during that time, of course, but these were regional and national affairs. For the majority of the population of Europe during the twenty-five years leading up to WWI, war was something that happened far away, and to somebody else.
But dangerous black ghettoes are the rule. They have always been, are now, and always will be unsafe and unsavory places.

The Germans were generally welcome in the French and British Empires which controlled darkie quite well. So it’s very difficult to figure out precisely how Germany was white supremacist.
