Sen. Luján’s Stroke Torpedoes Senate Majority For Democrats

Before this happened, Senate Democrats only had a few months at most to overcome the hurdles of Manchin and Sinema to pass their agenda. In theory, the Democrats could have gotten their act together and passed a scaled down version of Build Back Better and confirmed Biden’s black woman to the Supreme Court before election season kicked in around April.

CNN:

“(CNN) – Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Luján, who recently suffered a stroke, will be back in the Senate in 4-6 weeks, “barring any complications,” according to a person close to the senator.

If the New Mexico Democrat is back in Washington in that time frame, Democrats will likely still be able to proceed with their current plans for a swift vetting process and confirmation of President Joe Biden’s forthcoming Supreme Court nominee. Senate Democrats have so far been signaling for now they won’t slow down or alter plans to swiftly vet and confirm a nominee, despite the senator’s absence.

Democrats control a 50-50 partisan split in the Senate and need a simple majority to confirm Supreme Court nominees. …”

Luján is done until late March.

Senators can’t vote as proxies like in the House.

Biden’s SCOTUS nominee could still sail through with Lady G’s support, however, this eats up the clock and makes it less likely that even any scraps of Build Back Better make it through the Senate.

  1. Ron Klain can still nominate the rabbinical consensus negress for SCOTUS. Retardicans will huff and puff, and vote almost unanimously for her.

  2. Once again, we are being distracted by, “Look! Squirrel!”

Justice Stephen had no intentions of stepping down and retiring from the bench; the White House leaked “the news” to the press who broadcast it all over hell’s half acre. I guess he could have contradicted them, but there was Justice Scalia’s unfortunate and sudden death by natural causes … he was found with a pillow over his face .. but he took the hint and concurred, only slightly demurring about the month he was going to announce it himself.

I realize that there are no White Male Protestants represented on the court, but Breryer’s retirement leaves Elena Kagan as the only Jew on SCOTUS. And Sotomayer, as the liberal who will have been there the longest will set the agenda of the liberals on the court. If Sotomayer and Kagan have any disagreements, the new justice, a Black female, is going to be the swing vote.

This nominee is rattling cages in some unexpected corners who, one would think, would know better. An incoming Georgetown Law Professor, by the name of Ilya Shapiro, is being put on blast for tweeting, “Objectively best pick for Biden is Sri Srinivasan, who is solid prog and v smart. Even has identity politics benefit of being first Asian (Indian) American. But alas doesn’t fit into latest intersectionality hierarchy so we’ll get lesser black woman. Thank heaven for small favors?”

Lest we forget, prior to Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s death, one third of SCOTUS was more kosher than a New York delicatessen. I guess White European “Supremacists” aren’t the only bunch out there that aren’t thrilled at the prospect of being replaced.
