How did the “movement” end up in this fiasco?
I would say that it really boils down to two things:

Yes, the distinction between white nationalism and white advocacy. This is telling of where we are. White nationalism means white nations, run by whites, for the benefit of whites, mostly. White advocacy is just what it sounds like- this usually excludes a ruler-ship role. Our minority status and fast declining demographics means white nationalism is a distant dream and we must now ‘settle’ on white advocacy- whites will live in countries where they are minorities and many or most of the leadership positions are to be held by non whites, but whites organize to stand up for their rights. The only way now for white nationalism to take root is if a seismic shift occurs in the minds of the mass of whites, to develop the requisite revolutionary consciousness.
This is your rosy definition of White Nationalism.
You’re not taking into account the cumulative weight of decades of activists trashing the brand with mass shootings, Neo-Nazi goon marches, made up fake religions, cults of personality, fake political parties, and so on. All of this baggage and more has defined White Nationalism in the public mind.

Its never going to become a thing. There will never be enough Whites, who are into being White, to make White a thing. The sheer magnitude of negotiating the creation of an identity of Whiteness for a nation is to confounding.
However, creating an identity around White advocacy is a thing. That is not am oxymoron. Advocating on behalf of White interests is far more easier to establish than White Nationalism.
Better still, American Nationalism is a thing. Promoting American Nationalism is easily something most Whites will gravitate too. Simply put, most Whites are American by national identity already. All that needs to be done is enlivening American national identity norms and the majority of Whites in America will gravitate to it. By its nature it will be exclusionary. Obvious non-Whites can’t be American nationals. Firthermore, there are plenty of Ellis Island ethnic rif Raf around who will be repelled by traditional American identity. That will.jist make it all the easier to put boundaries around American identity. That is the way forward, not this foolish racial national thing which doesn’t make any sense.

First, White Nationalism was always destined fail. It was created to fail. Simply put, White Nationalism is an oxymoron. White is a race, but nationalism is the promotion of a Nation. There is no such thing as the White Nation, and therefore there cannot be White Nationalism. There can be German nationalism, Italian Nationalism, Japanese Nationalism, British Nationalism, etc. The Nazi German Party did not promote White Nationalism, they promoted German Nationalism. So many of these black conservatives don’t lead anywhere.
