MAGA was supposed to bring inflation down. Instead, the dollar has lost over 30% of its value over the past six years. Inflation has risen since Joe Biden left office thanks in large part to Trump’s foolish war with Iran for Israel. Trump’s erratic use of tariffs as weapons failed to bring back manufacturing jobs, created chaos with supply chains, drove up prices and was finally slapped down by the Supreme Court. Trump’s use of tariffs discredited tariffs and made economic nationalism unpopular.
MAGA was supposed to deliver “mass deportations” after ICE got billions of dollars from the Big Beautiful Bill. The people who were serious about “mass deportations” like Greg Bovino were fired or have since resigned. Markwayne Mullin is now in charge of DHS and immigration enforcement is no longer dominating headlines because nothing much is happening.
MAGA was supposed to deliver “no new wars.” Instead, the whole year has been spent on Trump’s foreign adventures in Venezuela and Iran. Trump is currently trying to destroy the Cuban economy to force regime change there. If that effort fails, which seems likely since decades of sanctions haven’t brought down the Cuban government, he is planning another stupid military intervention.
The sum total of all this has made Trump more unpopular than Obama and George W. Bush.

What Trump and his team failed to account for was that in the late 19th century, from the end of the Civil War to WWI: 1865 – 1914, there was no corporate income tax. It was the combination of tariffs and no corporate income tax that made late 19th century U.S. industrial policy so successful. Tariffs alone would help industry but it would take the repeal of the corporate income tax also to really have a successful industrial policy and Congress isn’t interested in that.
Businesses can deduct the bribes/campaign contributions they pay to Congress from their tax liability including hiring horrible lobbyists who infest Washington.

There was no income tax of any kind – personal either. That was enacted via a rigged ratification of a constitutional amendment in 1913.
