By 1855, only five states in the Union had not restricted the voting rights of free negroes: Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. In other words, New England. This and many other entries have been added to the American Racial History Timeline.

This is certainly true but it was none other than the Abolitionists(!!) who wanted New England to secede prior to the Civil War because (a) they didn’t want to be part of a Union which allowed slavery and (b) they didn’t want free blacks moving up to their neck of the woods.
