For over 150 years people in the South have been saying: “The South will rise again.” And it has. This time White National Authoritarianism resides in the Republican Party. And once again we must fight to preserve a Nation “Of the People, By the People, and For the People.”— Rob Reiner (@robreiner) February 12, 2022
This is the first election cycle in which the GOP quit worrying about being called “racist” by “journalists” and started framing Democrats as anti-White. It is working for them.
“Democrats’ own research shows that some battleground voters think the party is “preachy,” “judgmental” and “focused on culture wars,” according to documents obtained by POLITICO.
And the party’s House campaign arm had a stark warning for Democrats: Unless they more forcefully confront the GOP’s “alarmingly potent” culture war attacks, from critical race theory to defunding the police, they risk losing significant ground to Republicans in the midterms. …
If Democrats don’t answer Republican hits, the party operatives warned, the GOP’s lead on the generic ballot balloons to 14 points from 4 points — a dismal prediction for Democrats when the GOP only needs to win five seats to seize back the majority. But when voters heard a Democratic response to that hit, Republicans’ edge narrowed back down to 6 points, giving candidates more of a fighting chance, especially since those numbers don’t factor in Democrats going on the offensive. …”
I stress … this is all relative.
Relatively speaking, the GOP has become more comfortable with leaning into rightwing populism and White grievance politics than in previous election cycles. In the 2020 election, the term anti-White, the Great Replacement and secession hadn’t gone mainstream. Steve King was also condemned by GOP leadership for saying less extreme things than Marjorie Taylor Greene. Donald Trump didn’t even talk about White people until one of his most recent rallies. Trump left the gun on the table in 2020 and allowed Jared Kushner to drive his campaign into the ground with shit like the Platinum Plan.
Look at the Democrats own internal polling … the GOP has a 14 point advantage on the generic congressional ballot when you frame them and hit them like we do. Pay attention to other revealing metrics like ratings and small dollar donations.
