It is worth noting here that Russia’s peace terms are 1.) Ukraine doesn’t join NATO and becomes a neutral country, 2.) recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, 3.) recognition of the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics and 4.) Ukraine ceases military action.
Zelensky is asking us to go to war with Russia over NATO’s open door policy, which he himself has already conceded, but particularly over Crimea and Donbas which are never going to be restored to Ukraine. He could end all of this tomorrow by conceding Crimea and Donbas are lost.
Is the status of Donbas worth World War III? The answer is unequivocally “no.” No, we are not going to fight a war with Russia over an issue so remote to our national interests.
