Kevin McCarthy Reverses Course On Future Ukraine Aid

Good news.

We need a choice on the war in Ukraine.

Washington Post:

“House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) is signaling that if Republicans win the House majority in next month’s midterm elections, the GOP is likely to oppose more aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia.

Since the invasion in February, the majority of congressional Republicans and Democrats have united in authorizing billions of dollars in U.S. military and humanitarian assistance to Kyiv as a geopolitical and moral stand against Vladimir Putin’s aggression.

McCarthy, who could be House speaker if Republicans triumph, indicated that that could end in a GOP-led House.

“I think people are gonna be sitting in a recession and they’re not going to write a blank check to Ukraine,” he recently told Punchbowl News. “They just won’t do it.”

McCarthy suggested that Americans want Congress to focus on issues closer to home.

“There’s the things [the Biden administration] is not doing domestically,” he said. “Not doing the border, and people begin to weigh that. Ukraine is important, but at the same time, it can’t be the only thing they do, and it can’t be a blank check.” …

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has warned that if the GOP wins the House, help for Ukraine would be in jeopardy.

“I just see a freight train coming, and that is Trump and his operation turning against aid for Ukraine,” he said on MSNBC. “House Republicans, if they were to take the majority, being preternaturally against anything Joe Biden is for — including the war in Ukraine — and there being a real crisis where the House Republican majority would refuse to support additional aid to Ukraine.”

If the Democrats win the midterms, then our foreign policy will be continuing to support the war in Ukraine for “as long as it takes” for the next two years.

If the Republicans win the midterms, then Congress defunds Zelensky and forces Ukraine to negotiate a ceasefire and settlement with Russia. This can be done by forcing Democrats to vote for something anathema to them like building the border wall to continue funding Ukraine.

Note: If nothing else, support for Ukraine can be dramatically cut back from what it otherwise would be in a Democratic Congress. Write Zelensky a symbolic annual check for like $100 million.

  1. If the Republicans win, they will still support the war in Ukraine because that is what they do. Maybe not as much but the support and money will still be there.

    • Yeah they’ve sent them billions and billions already! Besides whatever other countries send them. The Republicans are such a disaster.

  2. I hope Russia wraps this up by Christmas. The question is: Would Vicky Nuland and fellow tribe members rather go out in nuclear fire than face defeat in Ukraine. I believe they are that mad.

  3. Yeah HW, that would be a nice trajectory to move along. But we know these neo con maniacs are seriously intent on facilitating a war between the West (NATO) and the East (Russia/China/the SCO).

Watch out for another false flag, to be blamed on Russia seeking revenge for Nordstream and Kerch bridge attacks.

A false flag so serious even anti war politicians will be swept along in its wake.

It’s sad, but I think inevitable.

  4. McCarthy is a milquetoast POS, same with all the other repubs except for a small handful, including MTG.

They’ll keep funding wars until the cows come home. I wouldn’t be surprised if McCarthy is announcing this in an overall effort to keep the anarcho communists in power.

  5. The Republicans like McCarthy are weathervanes. I guess the wind is blowing in the direction of peace to the great distress of the scumbags and lunatics in the Deep State.

Let’s see how stalwart these Republican weathervanes are after the election when the Deep State administers another dose of blackmail against them aided and abetted by those notorious liars in the Lügenpresse.

For a professional politician there is nothing worse than losing an election. Caught between the threats and promises of the Deep State and public anger and fear over another war is every scumbag politician’s worst nightmare. They signed up for the gibs such as insider trading, not public abuse and losing elections.

As children are fond of saying: “It’s not fair!”, and it isn’t, I guess.

  6. Nope. Anything said 3 weeks before the election has no meaning. No one is going to cut Ukraine’s tribute. And McCarthy and his Mexican wife don’t support any border, either. Never have, never will.

    • Most House Republicans voted against the last aid package. Those who voted for it aren’t coming back like Adam Kinzinger

  7. Does anyone really believe that funding for Ukrainian “aid” would be drastically reduced or eliminated altogether if Kevin “the closeted homo” McCarthy became the new Speaker of the House? The only people foolish enough to believe that also support Herschel Walker,
    aka, America’s newest Magical Negro.

    • Most House Republicans voted against the last aid package. Those who voted for it are largely either retiring or lost primaries.

        • 1.) Opposition to funding the war in Ukraine has grown between March and October. The largest faction in the GOP already believes too much has been spent on the war. Americans always sour on wars over the long haul.

2.) MAGA has already turned against Ukraine funding.

3.) Each spending passage has encountered more and more opposition in both the House and Senate with nearly all House Republicans voting against the last one.

4.) Of the House and Senate Republicans who have voted for Ukraine spending, many of them are either retiring like Adam Kinzinger or have lost their primaries and won’t be back

5.) Finally, there are lots of Republicans who are running against continuing to fund the war in Ukraine like Bolduc in New Hampshire or Vance in Ohio. Turnover in the House and Senate is expected to bring more antiwar Republicans to power.

7.) McCarthy needs their support to become Speaker of the House and to pass anything. He can’t continue funding the war in Ukraine when it is opposed by the majority of his own caucus

  8. @TW,

Better to reign in hell is a feature and not a bug to them.
They view us as cattle to be milked and slaughtered when no longer useful.

  9. McCarthy did not say no Ukraine aid he said cuts. One dollar in reduced aid to Ukraine and McCarthy keeps his word. McCarthy is Irish. remember that, we are not going to get a fair deal or straight talk from one of their kind, no way in hell.
