I was putting our kids to bed when the news broke.
It has been clear for a while now that the war was merely paused in exchange for the return of hostages. There was only a temporary ceasefire and never a negotiated settlement.
From what I understand, the negotiations over the release of hostages broke down and Israel and Hamas have both pointed fingers at each other for the collapse. Personally, I don’t believe Israel ever intended to move forward into the second phase of implementing the agreement it negotiated.
The last two months of relative peace and quiet in the Middle East has been a refreshing change from the daily carnage of the Biden administration. I won’t pretend to know what the future holds in Gaza. I hope the negotiations resume, the hostages are released and the ceasefire is extended. I hope this is just a temporary setback rather than a full return to the genocide that unfolded under Biden.
Either way, I expect support for Our Greatest Ally will continue to evaporate. If the war really is back on though, I expect it will be a bigger problem for Democrats who are very divided over the issue and who currently lack both leadership and a clear identity. It could escalate the current infighting.
It goes without saying that the last thing Americans want is to get bogged down in another stupid war in the Middle East. I remain confident that the Trump administration understands this.

This is undeniably true. Why is it so difficult for some to understand? We DO NOT have a legitimate dog in this fight. That type of thinking might be found among MAGA America Firsters. These are people who don’t often think of the intricacies of geopolitics and demographics. They are common folk. They general don’t like complex wars or counter insurgencies. They like to go to war over Pearl Harbor though. I don’t really care how much the US gives Israel. For the last 25 years, it represents a fraction that the US gave out to foreign governments every year. On this you are correct. It is going to be very difficult to get the right off the Zionist plantation and more importantly, the Zionist off the Rightwing plantation. But, the reason is simple. No one wants to see millions of Israelis becoming refugees and asking to settle next door and everyone recognizes the growing threat of the third world to every colonial settler state like Israel: US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and now even the European homelands.
Furthermore, despite what you all say, Israel is an important ally. It does things like spy on us despite our alliance, but if you think we don’t in turn, you are wrong. There is a happy medium in the relationship and it is most importantly built upon shared interests. Israel does indeed perform valuable services on behalf of the US. They just aren’t sycophants. This is what I think is your issue. Everyone knows that political parties and candidates come in packages, and that you vote for the entire package. So if you justified supporting Trump saying that you did a little bad to do a greater good, it would make sense. The problem is, you try to to argue that the entire package fits your shoe when it doesn’t. In other words, Trump is not aligned to you in Middle Eastern policy, but you imagine he is to justify voting for the entire package.
I decided not to support either candidate, but I do imagine that in some situations, I would support a candidate that I agree with part of the package in the future. It’s really necessary in our two party system.
