I’m not sure where I want to go from here. I will just say that the rightwing populism of the last decade has been exposed as a gigantic scam. I have also decided to sit out the next two elections. I need to take a break from politics. I would also rather know this now than find out years down the road.

…and if you’re not doing it for yourself (i.e., out of self-interest), then do it for your children. Be honest: you can’t help yourself (at least not for long—after a while, you’ll start to feel cooped up). You’re far too used to it. I predict you’ll stay politically active—want to bet? I’m old enough to speak from life experience, because I don’t have much longer until retirement (if I live that long).

Don’t let all this drama get to you personally or make you feel affected. Instead, view it as an uninvolved but ironically observant bystander. You are a political person, so you are interested in the well-being of your people.
That is a good quality, and Trump, as a phenomenon of our times, has absolutely nothing to do with your commitment. It is right and good to expose him for what he is. And that is precisely the task you should fulfill.
Realize this: You have everything right now; you are richer than you realize. Unfortunately, it is often only when you lose everything bit by bit that you realize—too late—what opportunities you had and how well off you actually were. If only the young knew, if only the old could. You both know and can do it now, so use your potential and make the most of it!
Also, keep this in mind: Hold on to your hobbies and your personal habits! Women try to suck you into their “domestic” affairs, drain you, and then discard you. They tend to try to manipulate and control you. Your “private life” is something beyond their reach, something they can’t control. Maintain that space—it makes you more uncontrollable and more attractive to them.
Take it so far that she ends up begging you to let her spend more time with you than on your political cause. Then you will have successfully averted the risk of being abandoned and reclaimed the personal space that defines you (but remains “incomprehensible” to her).
Last thought: Always be nice to her (no brown-nosing!), but don’t go to her! She has to come to you! She wants to win you over—give her the chance to do so.
Remember that she seems to have the upper hand now because of the children you have together. You have to act as if you’re completely unfazed by it.
