In the final years of the war, the Netherlands was bombed by the “Allies,” though not by Canadians. Toward the end of the war, however, German V-2 rockets were unfortunately also fired toward the Netherlands, causing civilian casualties because they lacked any precision guidance.
This is very regrettable, as is the Hunger Winter, which—at least according to “official” postwar historiography today—was triggered by a German blockade. But Germany, too, experienced a “hunger winter” as a result of Allied policies of retaliation, which cost nearly one million lives.

Did his father not, in fact, fight on the German side—first in Belgium, then in France, and finally on the Eastern Front—after being recruited in Rotterdam in 1940? Mr. Brink wisely refrains from providing his listeners with an answer to this question. But what reason could he possibly have for this all-too-obvious memory lapse and contradiction?
Mr. Brink claims that the German bombing of Rotterdam at the beginning of the occupation claimed 100,000 [!] lives, but the actual number is approximately 1,000, one-fifth of whom were military personnel. Mr. Brink is simply inflating the figure by about 100 times.
