How Europe Lost Roman Technology

Since we are all getting tired of Trump and the midterms, we will continue to entertain Nick Fuentes’s argument that the Germans would be “absolutely nothing” without the Roman Empire. My argument is that Roman civilization collapsed in the West, most Roman technology, literature and knowledge was simply lost and Western civilization emerged centuries later around the North Sea.

  1. Fuentes argument is not true. Germans like celts, had their own culture even before the Romans arrived. Then again, during the conquest and Migration Period, Roman and Germanic cultures influenced one another.

  2. The Anglo-Saxons are the most advanced White people precisely because they never adopted Roman Law.

Justinian’s code was a blight wherever adopted.

Even in the Mediterranean countries, the Germanic influence was crucial. Late Medieval and early modern Italians, Spaniards, Portuguese and French were much more adventurous than ancient Greeks or Romans precisely because their nobles were descended from Germanic invaders (Lombards, Visigoths, Franks, Burgundians and Normans).

  3. The military cadence or infantry marching in step was lost when Rome fell and did not return until a French military Marshal brought it back in the 18th century at least in Europe. Infantry moves a lot faster this way.

Roman troops often sang marching songs (cantilenae) or chanted to keep morale high, ease fatigue, and synchronize their movement over long distances

Other Ancient armies used precise rhythms to move efficiently. The Assyrians used cymbals, the Spartans marched to flutes, and early Chinese dynasties used drums under penalty of execution for breaking the beat.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, European armies abandoned organized tactical marching. In medieval and early modern warfare, soldiers essentially walked disordered, a casual mob toward the enemy rather than moving in lockstep.

French Marshal Saxe recognized that marching to a musical beat (a tactical military cadence) reduced soldier fatigue, kept military formations tight, and allowed units to move much faster on the battlefield. His insistence on reintroducing the drumbeat changed European warfare and laid the groundwork for modern military drill and marching bands

    • European military units were using hornes, fifes, drums, marching sticks long before the 18th century. The first recorded accounts go all the way back to the crusaders who also used hymns and prayer marchers in battle. Horns of course were used even before that and likely the use of tabors a type of drum.

We know that by the 1300s even the infantry units were using complex commands for signaling using these instruments in a systematic manner. Documented uses of complex signaling for infantry unit coordination with cavalry and tactical combined arms formations for battlefield communication, marching cadence, and morale, include Swiss and European battlefields such as the Battle of Morgarten (1315) and the Battle of Sempach (1386).

Military use of musical instruments in European formations post Roman era has a long tradition going way further back than some French marshal. The later simply applied a complex series of rythms using classical music structure on a large scale. The battlefields before the late between the late 17th and late 19th century were indeed a magnificent if grotesque affair of color and sound. But they had them long before then too just different in scale and order.

      • AGB,

I am no military expert so I relied heavily on AI. Next time I will consult various books. AI has failed me before like saying the black population of Texas was 25.9% in 1970. Live and learn. Thank you for the information.

  4. >>> Roman civilization collapsed in the West, most Roman technology, literature and knowledge was simply lost

Most all roman culture was maintained in the Byzantine Empire, then most of the people fled west when Byzantium collapsed in 1450s bringing the books and culture with them. This is the reason Northern Italy went into overdrive in the mid 1400s. Roman culture was restored in Europe via the Byzantine Empire’s collapse.

Additionally, Catholic monasteries were repositories for much of roman written texts. The Catholic Church kept Latin alive throughout the Dark Ages and associated texts.

Some things were lost, like Roman Concrete, engineering concepts.

  5. Charles The Great is the Father of Europe.
This isnt entirely true but it is true.
Rebuilt and saved Europe, did everything,
including saving Latin, literacy, knowledge, books,
and how we all write today, among many things.
Moslems had a pincer move on Europe at this time.

  6. BUILDER OF EUROPE

THIS is what we need today,
wars only to defend our borders, culture, country,
    and rebuild, knowledge, tech, etc

Charlemagne was named after his grandfather, Charles Martel.

    Name

Several languages were spoken in Charlemagne’s world.[1][b] He was known as Karlo to Early Old French (or Proto-Romance) speakers and as Carolus (or Karolus) in Medieval Latin, the formal language of writing and diplomacy.[2][3] Charles is the modern English form of these names. The name Charlemagne, as the emperor is normally known in English, comes from the French Charles-le-magne (‘Charles the Great’).[4] In modern German and Dutch, he is known as Karl der Große and Karel de Grote respectively.[5] The Latin epithet magnus (‘great’) may have been associated with him during his lifetime, but this is not certain. The contemporary Royal Frankish Annals routinely call him Carolus magnus rex (‘Charles the great king’).[6] That epithet is attested in the works of the Poeta Saxo around 900, and it had become commonly applied to him by 1000.[7]

  7. Excellent post, thank you for sharing this. I am teaching Roman and Byzantine history and really appreciate these perspectives. I have been incorporating these viewpoints (and from others) in my lectures.

  8. Mainstream courtier history, just as they taught us in Western Civ 101 as a freshman in 1976.

I didn’t believe much of it then and I don’t believe any of it now. To me it is mythology invented by the pathological liars, the Catholics and especially their monks. Comparable to the extroadinary tales of Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.

Great reading, but not real history. Arthur existed and was King of course, as was Charles. But the feats attributed to them are mythological.

Roman technology was well preserved until your friends the Persian led Islamic Armies came through and positively wrecked everything by 700.

    • Italy was already a wreck by 600 AD due to the Gothic War and the Plague. Also, the parts of the eastern Empire like Syria and Palestine that were overrun by Muslims continued to flourish. Damascus was the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate.

      • BIG FACT:

Something that is lost in all these reasons for Roman decline, are reasons contemporary Roman authors gave, Rome had ceased to be Roman. Authors like Ovid and Lucian talked about Rome being populated by jwz and Persians and a rare Roman. The same thing was happening in the legions , Romans were replaced with foreign mercenaries.

        RACIAL DISPLACEMENT !

      • @Rangewolf and Hunter Wallace,

It is true the Catholic monks lied or glossed over many things. For example, they popularized the dark ages because they said there was no literature. In fact there was lots of it, but it just wasn’t transcribed and passed done into the monestaries and when it was it was in Latin. So, when Arianism was wiped out and the Papacy restored its supremacy, they made everything Latin based and the old languages died out or morphed into the modern Romance and Germanic languages including English. Then the monks said look the dark ages!

The poor Celts who did so much to keep Christianity alive in the northern realms were completely replaced and deliberately forgotten by the Papists. This even though some of their myths survived thanks to Celtic Christians translating some of them to Latin and with bias of course. Ironically, centuries later the Irish Celts couldn’t stop kissing the ass of Papists to own the English in some sort of allegory to Hunter kissing the ass of Moslems to own the Jews.

Yes, what little was remembered, was mostly in the legal codes the Germans brought which essentially brought freedom to long oppressed Imperial Roman civilization. Still, even the laws of the Visigoths, Franks, Lombards, etc were all eventually replaced with Roman civil law. Only it’s sister legal system Anglo-Saxon managed to survive in strength and just barely. Thanks to the Anglo Saxons and ultimately the Protestant reformation, the light of European liberty was not lost in the dark of orientalized Papacy and Orthodoxy.

Indeed, the early Germanic and Celtic kingdoms actually not only kept the lights on in general in Roman Europe they made it brighter for a period. The Ostrogoths in Italy actually rebuilt the Roman aqueducts, baths, and streets of Rome and many others. The merovingians created a strange dyarchy with Gallo Roman city dwellers still retaining Romaness while Frankish warriore kept the roads safe and Gallo Roman aristocrats transfered the armored cavalry into Frankish knights. But as Hunter said, it was destroyed during the Gothic Wars started by Justinian and later finished off by Justinian’s plague. That really did it in for what remained of Roman civilization.

However some areas kept on for a bit, the Visigoths in Spain, but especially the Franks. They had incorporated the last true Gallo-Roman province aka Kingdom of Syragius aka Kingdom of Soissons in northwestern France. These features armored cavalry units, gallic customs, Roman laws and civilization. Although some minor areas were similar such as in modern Western England, Wales, and Southwestern Scotland, and eventually seeped into the Anglo Saxons, the area in northwestern France was the beginning of medieval Europe. That system with its fuedal system and knights, was a modernization and democratization of the Roman Latifunda estate mixed with Gallic customs and German warrior liberty. The era of the new aristocracy had begun. This was later adopted by the Normans and spread massively to England, Spain, Italy and the Levant by them.

Speaking of the Levant, Rangewolf is right in that the Eastern Romans kept Greco Roman civilization alive for a very long time. But again the wars, this time with Hunter’s allies the Persians, and later Justinian’s plague really wiped that out. By the time of the Moslem invasions m there was a just a very thin layer of White Greco-Roman civilization on top of a bunch of mud and what there remained was extremely caste oriented, oppressive, and state centered. Think a French elite ruling over Arabicized riotous population with mixed amounts of middling Geeco-Roman-Syrians. The post Moslem Umayyeds were just parasitical camel pirates ruling over a Christian but heavily semeticized population with about 20% left being Greco Romans. They are the ones who translated everything into Sand N@gger and gave Hunter’s leftist allies the chance to spread damnable lies about Sand N@ggerdom being high civilization or something.

So, it’s nuanced. Germans and Celts kept things going in the West. Catholics monopolized Latin and let the Germans and Celts do their thing until the Papacy coopted their elite or replaced them, and then made everyone forgot the Celto-Germans’ post Roman Empire restoration. Then they called it dark age barbarism so some Wop Mestizo like Nick Fuentes could later brag about his Catholic Latiness. Meanwhile from the East we get to hear about Sand N@ggers saying we wuz Kangs cuz some Greco-Roman translated the classics to Arabic and was forced to use an Arab name. Now Hunter and his Leftist allies have allied with them and are burning down France. The wheel of fortune continues. Cue O Fortuna song!

  9. What Roman technology? LOL. The technology the Romans had they borrowed from the Greeks.

That’s why it was known as Greco-Roman until it went out of fashion like BC, AD.

  10. “and Western civilization emerged centuries later around the North Sea”

You sound like you want to read Henry Adams, except he believe its his East Anglians and Normans who are the “superior race” – and invoking Karl Marx at the same time: you old reconciliationist relics had your worldview set up after Bismarck ended the Kulturkampf: that’s when the Yankees started to hate the Germans and the Czar. This is why Henry Adams, when he does an overview of the states in the first six chapters of his book separately published as “America in 1800” – literally skips directly from Pennsylvania to Virginia and simply refuses to mention Maryland, even though Baltimore was one of the most important cities in America, the inaugurating the B&O ranked by Charles Carroll as one of the most important symbol honors he was ever afforded, and he was perhaps the wealthiest founder: the one whose wealth mattered in the future. He was also probably the best educated Founder, Irish Catholic, of course. Roger Taney was the successor to John Marshall – again, an Irish Catholic, and he didn’t make his reputation defending Randolphs from a late term abortion murder charge.

While I would never underestimate the importance of the monasteries in Great Britain or the importance of the German states of the Nederduitsch people. Note, the name of the people was Nederduitsch, the word “neder” for “nether” or low modifying the sort of people they were “Dutch” or “German” people, recall that it was AQUITAINE that was considered the “most civilized” part of France, it was in the heart of Germany that the Ottonians began to build the first great cathedrals. The English, as Yankee wasps, the “mountaineers” who often self-describe as English (somehow it was the Germans in PA and the Shenandoah valley who fed Lee’s Army, or “Tidewater” so-called gentry are the truly marginal relict peoples in America, quickly falling behind the “English” Mormons in influence.

Don’t get me wrong, nobody can deny the importance of the English, but it really is bizarre the NEED TO PRETEND TO BE SOMETHING THEY ARE NOT – THE ANGLOSPHERE AND THE WEST ARE JUST WORDS FOR COUNTRIES CONTROLLED BY JEWS. Henry Ford built his first overseas factor in the county where his father was born, advocated for peace during WWI: but his famine Irish ancestry is blotted out of narratives. Just as George Meade’s Irish Catholic Philadelphia merchant roots and Philip Sheridan’s Irish-Catholic background is muted. All the Lincolnites never tell you that William Tecumseh Sherman’s son Thomas became a Jesuit priest.

If the Germans had not conquered Rome they would have conquered whatever civilizations existed in the Mediterranean, and would have gradually converted to the religion of those civilizations. The German pressure on Rome was exerted over a very long period of time: from the Teutones and Cimbri onward. It seems apparent when the Romans failed to conquer the German territories, they doomed themselves to eventual destruction.

It’s important to understand, something that ignorant wasp peons simply can’t or won’t ever acknowledge: is that it really was in Italy that the most important Greek texts were translated into Latin, and thereby preserved. Archimedes most important works would have been lost if St. Thomas Aquinas had not instructed William of Moerbeke, future Archbishop of Corinth, to translate seminal Greek works into Latin. Without that, there would have been no scientific Revolution. When most of the scholarly books in England were being destroyed by Henry VIII, Tartaglia was publishing Archimedes, Tartagia was the teacher of Galileo’s teacher, he published a work on ballistics for the Venetians.

The monasteries of the early medieval England existed because of St. Augustine of Canterbury and the Irish monks who established them.

“Western Civilization” survived on the fringes of the Continent: in Asturias, the remote monasteries on the Atlantic, Aquitaine, and in the Carolingian and Ottonian courts.

When this portrait from a museum in Vienna went viral on the internet twenty years ago, the English decided to appropriate it to Henry VIII’s sister through their “academic” system. There are practically no good portraits of Anne Boleyn or Queen Elizabeth (it’s possible that Queen Mary sent one of Elizabeth to Spain and it therefore survives in the Prado – it’s said to be a portrait of Jane Dormer) – they are not lifelike representations. Henry VIII had some good funerary sculpture produced by an Italian sculptor, but basically, English portraiture of that time was backward, because England was a backward country. If you look at the other paintings that resemble the visage of this woman, it’s obvious they’re of the young Katherine. Erasmus asserted that Katherine of Aragon’s education was superior to Henry VIII’s. That is not the face of a Tudor slut. (Charles Brandon was on the jury that voted Anne Boleyn’s guilt)

Only a nation of lilliputians could say that an occupation of London by 40,000 Dutch troops based on the tale of a baby smuggled in a warming pan and the political foundation of Titus Oates’ lies was a “Glorious Revolution.”

“What was the nature of the population of 1790 ? The Bureau of the Census
calls it ” original native stock ” because it is as American as our Government.”

“As American as our government” – as if the failed American system, could only come from those who were “REAL AMERICANS” – “the original founding stock” hahaha!

The following article is illuminating as to the “American system of government” – and who has controlled it – since at least 1911!

” On December 5th, 1911 President Taft delivered his State of the Union Address. In his message, he did not push for abrogation of the treaty, but did recognize that Russia was interfering in the “full recognition of the rights of American citizens under this treaty”. Taft again promised only the continuation of conferences with Russia and expressed his expectation that he would have additional information immediately after the Christmas recess”. To Congress, these words must have seemed out of touch with reality. Just one day earlier, Chairman Sulzer of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs had introduced a resolution to abrogate the treaty.

“By direction of the State Department, our ambassador to Russia has recently been having a series of conferences with the minister of foreign affairs of Russia, with a view to securing a clearer understanding and construction of the treaty of 1832 between Russia and the United States and the modification of any existing Russian regulations which may be found to interfere in any way with the full recognition of the rights of American citizens under this treaty. I believe that the Government of Russia is addressing itself seriously to the need of changing the present practice under the treaty and that sufficient progress has been made to warrant the continuance of these conferences in the hope that there may soon be removed any justification of the complaints of treaty violation now prevalent in this country.

I expect that immediately after the Christmas recess I shall be able to make a further communication to Congress on this subject.”

The next day, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 301 to 1 in favor of abrogating the 1832 treaty. Secretary Knox tried to intervene and make one last effort to effect change in Russia. Knox asked Russia to join in a public announcement that they would review their policy towards American Jews and begin talks on a new treaty with the United States. It was too late the damage was done; Russia took abrogation as an insult and refused to consent to any public announcements. Meanwhile, the Senate unanimously endorsed abrogation on December 19th with amendments to terminate the resolution in a more soft-spoken term. The house agreed on December 20th and the Commercial Treaty of Commerce and Navigation was set to terminate on January 1, 1913.”

  11. The loss of Roman technology was great, and what was worse was the lack of dynamism in the culture, although it was retarded by political stagnation. Byzantine power was good, but it also stagnated, and they just were in a lousy neighborhood with every barbarian in the world coming their way. The Byzantines and Persians had cities, and outsiders kept hitting them because they had wealth. In Frankopan’s Silk Roads, he argues the Mongols didn’t conquer Europe because there was no wealth for them, whereas the near east was full of loot. They passed Europe by; lucky us.
Christina: Your report on the re-institution of Roman drill and marching is good, but the original recreation was by Maurice of Nassau, a Dutch leader who used the Roman drill he studied in the Spanish/Dutch wars of the late 16th century. The Spanish Tercios also drilled and perfected their fighting, as did Cromwell’s army and Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. The real precision drill came from Prussia in the 18th century, and the Prussian army was able to outmatch and outmaneuver anyone. They did a fast step, but also copied the slow march of Sparta when in battle formation, to keep the line together. Actually, the American army learned this in our revolution when Baron Von Steuben came to drill our troops in a simplified Prussian drill, then men trained were mixed with new men to train them. despite the image of the American revolution being a war of frontiersmen, most battles were fought European style, and when American troops were well-trained and led, they did well. Maurice de Saxe was a French marshal, probably one of the best soldiers of the 18th century (although his father was German…the Elector of Saxony), and he was considered one of the finest enlightened men of the age. The section on military music is very good. I have a lot of marches from the period, the slow and quick march.

    • dargason,

I appreciate all the information you have given me. I do not know much on this aspect of history. The Eastern Romans did develop a magnificent army but like you wrote their enemies were many. Their fantastic fortifications protecting Constantinople helped a lot as well.
Maurice of Nassau helps to prove that even a 1000 years later many roads still came from Rome.

  12. I feel like southern europeans are a borderline case where they are given the benefit of the doubt of being considered white when in reality they’re close to jews racially.

      • This is where I disagree with modern white nationalism. Northern europeans are a clear cut case, especially northwest. They’re white.
Southern Europeans are borderline, but can be given the benefit of the doubt. But I disagree with conflating the two.
If an individual Jews displays positive qualities, I’m willing to individually accept them as white.

  13. “There’s been so much race mixing around the Mediterranean, who knows what you’ll get.”

Its gotten horribly bad since the decolonialism in the 1960s. Contrary to what everybody says because being German apologists, the West didn’t take a wrong turn by defeating Nazi Germany, it took a wrong turn by surrendering to Anti-Colonialism. There are now more Middle East North Africans in Europe, especially the coastal Mediterranean areas, than at any time since the first Jihadis and possibly ever.

Whereas previously in the Greco Roman eras, the Europeans were pushing South and Eastward into MENA, it’s the exact opposite now. That’s not taking into consideration all the intervening time when Greeks settled the coasts of the Levant and Egypt then Semites and Anatolians immigrated into Rome and Italy, and then Germans conquered North Africa, all before the Moslems washed over everyone and up into the Southern Coasts of Europe again. But, I think the changes are so vast now, in the near future if things aren’t radically reversed, the bio-culural DNA of the area won’t be complex at all. It will all be N@ggers, Sand N@ggers, and Wogs.

    • > It will all be N@ggers, Sand N@ggers, and Wogs.

Just as planned by your jewish bosses, their Lavender Mafia underlings and treasonous white elites. Stupid cattle are more easily controlled and exploited.
