It has been ten years since this night.
In retrospect, the story of MAGA is that Donald Trump saw his victory in the 2016 election as a narcissist. He saw it as a personal affirmation. The 2020 election was a wake up call. Disillusioned Independents swung toward the Democrats and elected Joe Biden. The personality cult remained.
In the Biden years, the personality cult was still strong enough to hand Trump the Republican nomination in the 2024 election. Disillusioned Independents felt sorry for Trump and swung back to him and gave him a second chance. Trump saw his victory in the 2024 election as another personal affirmation and his hubris spiraled out of control. He demanded absolute fealty to his cult of personality and he pushed his coalition beyond the breaking point by launching the disastrous war with Iran for Israel.
MAGA shrunk into a pure Trump personality cult which wasn’t strong enough to carry the load in the 2026 midterms. Thus, the whole structure collapsed. He squandered two terms and two trifectas.
