At The American Interest, Walter Russell Mead complains of the “horrendous leadership” of the American South in the 1850s.
The real excellent leadership being that of the corporate lawyer Abraham Lincoln who waged a war of aggression on the people of Virginia and Tennessee for peacefully seceding from the USA.
Let us compare Jefferson Davis to Barack Hussein Obama and compare their “leadership qualities.” I’m quite sure the Confederacy is “horrendous” from the perspective of The American Interest, which is the self interest of the USA and the liberal establishment, but what about the interest and perspective of the CSA which was destroyed in 1865?
What did The Confederate Interest of the CSA sound like?
“FELLOW-CITIZENS AND BRETHREN OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA: For now we are brethren, not in name merely, but in fact, men of one flesh, one bone, one interest, one purpose and of an identity of domestic institutions, we have hence I trust a prospect of living together in peace, with our institutions subject to protection not defamation. It may be our career will be ushered in in the middle of storm. It may be that as this morning opened with clouds, mist and rain, we shall have to encounter inconvenience at the beginning; but as the sun rose it lifted the mist and dispelled the clouds, and left the pure sunlight of Heaven, so will the progress of the Southern Confederacy carry us safe to the harbor of constitutional liberty and political equality. [Applause.] Thus we have nothing to fear at home, because we have homogenity. We will have nothing to fear abroad, because if war should come, if we must again baptize in blood the principles for which our fathers bled in the Revolution, we shall show that we are not degenerate sons, but will redeem the pledges they gave, preserve the sacred rights they transmitted to us, and show that Southern valor still shines as brightly as in 1776, 1812, and in every other conflict.

“An agricultural people, whose chief interest is the export of a commodity required in every manufacturing country, our true policy is peace, and the freest trade which our necessities will permit.”
“It is joyous, in the midst of perilous times, to look around upon a people united in heart, where one purpose of high resolve animates and actuates the whole–where the sacrifices to be made are not weighed in the balance against honor and right and liberty and equality. Obstacles may retard, they cannot long prevent the progress of a movement sanctified by its justice, and sustained by a virtuous people. Reverently let us invoke the God of our fathers to guide and protect us in our efforts to perpetuate the principles which, by his blessing, they were able to vindicate, establish and transmit to their posterity, and with a continuance of His favor, ever gratefully acknowledged, we may hopefully look forward to success, to peace, and to prosperity.“
Sounds a lot better to me.
Clearly, we are so much better off under Barack Hussein Obama in Black Run America in the year 2011, where it is a thought crime to be a White man, where future generations of White Southerners are being sold into slavery to Chinese bond holders, where teenagers disfigure their bodies with grotesque tattoos, where Lincoln’s Union and multinational corporations are sacred but the White family has been destroyed, where everyone works for the Wall Street credit card and the Countrywide mortgage, where our soldiers secure the border of South Korea and fight for the “freedom” of Libya and Turkey.
We are so much better off for getting the chance to live under 100 years of poverty in the USA, the Gilded Age, the Civil Rights Movement, World War 2, Korea, and Vietnam. Thankfully, Washington was wise enough to give us the “Great Society” and the Civil Rights Act of 1964, surrender Texas and California to Mexico, sue Arizona and Alabama, put Luis Gutierrez in the House of Representatives, and to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy to make the U.S. military a more effective fighting force in the Middle East.
Where would be without the leadership of Chuck Schumer, Harry Reid, and Barney Frank? Where would we be without Newsweek and the New York Times and Barack Hussein Obama’s teleprompter? Where would we be without Wall Street and the Federal Reserve’s magic money machine?
Better off?
Note: If you want to read Jefferson Davis’s message in a bottle for posterity, you can read The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government and draw your own conclusions.
It is a far weightier volume than Rick Perry’s “Fed Up” or Barack Hussein Obama’s “Dreams of My Father.” There is nothing quite like the experience of reading the original sources and comparing them to court historians like James McPherson’s “Battle Cry of Freedom.”
Steyn is a smart man.
He will make the best of an awful situation. Make himself a lot of money. The flash mobs will do the talking when the economy collapses.
Any scenario for the collapse of America that doesn’t account for race is disingenuous. No doubt Mr Steyn knows better, but it’s too early to speak the truth.
