That Nov. 19 ruling drew an exasperated Trump to lash out at him as an ‘Obama judge,’ leading Roberts to issue a rare personal rebuke of the president.
‘We do not have Obama judges or Trump judges, Bush judges or Clinton judges,’ Roberts said in a statement distributed by the Supreme Court. ‘What we have is an extraordinary group of dedicated judges doing their level best to do equal right to those appearing before them.’
Trump was on the golf course in Palm Beach, Florida at the time and tweeted his response.
‘Sorry Chief Justice John Roberts, but you do indeed have “Obama judges,” and they have a much different point of view than the people who are charged with the safety of our country,’ he wrote. …”
How many times has this happened?
There has been a Republican majority on the Supreme Court for decades now. It is like Lucy taking the football away from Charlie Brown. Every few years a new “True Conservative” is appointed to the Supreme Court and the conservative base is convinced that this time it will be different. This time we will have a solid conservative majority that will do all sorts of wonderful things for the base.
In the last few years, conservatives have replaced 4 out of 5 Republican appointed Supreme Court Justices with Roberts, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. In theory, the retirement of Anthony Kennedy as media darling and perpetual moderate swing vote should have changed the ideological balance of power on the court. David Souter and John Paul Stevens who were appointed by Republican presidents only to “evolve” while on the bench and vote with the Democrat Justices are also gone.
Nothing has changed. The scam goes on with Roberts “evolving” to become the new Kennedy.
No matter how many “Republican” justices, enough will evolve to preserve GloboGayplex.
it’s not really a scam. there is tremendous prestige and media attention in being the ‘swing vote’. supreme court justices are just men. they have all the weaknesses men have, although perhaps less than the average man. but there will always be the temptation to step into that sweet, sweet media coverage, rather than living decades as some obscure judge that the average man has no idea about and who is never asked their opinion on television.
roberts was questionable from the beginning, as are many GOPe justices. we knew since the 2010 PPACA ruling that he wanted to make this the ‘roberts court’ and stand there in the history books, similar to the warren court, i think it was.

It’s developments like this that restore with me some degree of sympathy for Trump, despite his many failures, disappointments and missteps. Trump did what he promised to do, and what he could in this case, by using his executive authority to limit these fake asylum claims. And the establishment powers, with an assist from a Republican-appointed judge on this instance, just reversed it, undermining over 200 years of executive authority precedent This is an example of a development that is not Trump’s fault.
I tend to let my emotions get ahead of me in analyzing Trump because he has been objectively disappointing in so many ways. However, even though he signed tax cuts, etc. and has run with a lot of traditional trucon priorities, it is definitely still the case that Trump is not a Jeb or a Rubio. Jeb or Rubio would have signed a 30,000,000 person amnesty by now and probably gotten another full-blown war started, too.
And therein is the fatal flaw of the Constitution in that the Federalists did not put sufficient checks upon the Supreme Court and it has turned into a disaster exactly like the Anti-federalists predicted it would!~

This asylum caravan thing is Trump at his dumb, bombastic worst — it is very very clear that 99.9% of these caravaners do not deserve/qualify for asylum — fleeing poverty and an overabundance of ordinary criminality has never been, and must now/never be seen as, grounds for asylum — Trump should have sought competent legal advice — then declared all of Central and South America ‘safe’ for asylum purposes (which they are) — the asylum applications could then be formally, quickly declined and the people pushed back across the border — guaranteed: Mexico would stop all future caravans — then ASAP conclude a ‘safe third country’ agreement with Mexico, which would 1) obligate any asylum seekers passing thru Mexico to apply for asylum in Mexico, and 2) legally obligate Mexico to stop future caravans (they are not required to do that now) — most of the time both Trump and his administration ooze incompetence.
