Quite the social commentary that so many now care about Joe Rogan spreading Covid misinfo but so few cared about him bringing numerous white nationalists, Holocaust deniers and violent fascists on his show for years to spread far-right lies. pic.twitter.com/UNi8eXbYe3— Luke O’Brien (@lukeobrien) February 4, 2022
Extremism researchers have been sounding the alarm about Rogan since long before Covid. That's because he's not simply a podcast host looking to create, as he puts it, "interesting conversations." He's attached to a neoreactionary movement that uses misinfo/disinfo as a weapon. pic.twitter.com/skXfwaLWRc— Luke O'Brien (@lukeobrien) February 4, 2022
Once again, it is a funhouse mirror world.
The people who are jumping up and down and stomping their feet and having a tantrum and demanding censorship are the “liberals.” The people whose instinct is to say calm down, relax, get a grip and let him speak are the “authoritarians.” It is not the White House Press Secretary.
Note: As Brian Stelter would say, the meta story here is the demise of the New York media or the “mainstream media,” which now speaks to a regional niche audience of coastal professionals like Stephen Colbert or SNL. We need to think historically about this because the rise of New York in the 1920s and its rapid decline in the 2020s explains almost everything about our culture.
