The administration’s funding request, which comes as lawmakers begin their post-election session, also seeks $9.25 billion in COVID-19 funding to prepare for a possible winter surge and help combat the virus nationwide. Government funding expires in mid-December, and the Ukraine and COVID aid would be part of the package to fund the government through the end of September 2023.
The request for such a sizable amount of money for Ukraine comes as the GOP is poised to take control of the House following the midterm elections. House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy, who is in line to become speaker, has warned that Republicans wouldn’t support writing a “blank check” for Ukraine if they capture the majority. …”

Aside from local fighting, the ground war in Ukraine is likely effectively over — there is now an obvious opportunity for a negotiated settlement.
After the recent withdrawal of Russian troops in the Kherson region to the east bank of the Dnieper (during which they destroyed bridges across the Dneiper), I find it hard to imagine Russia restarting ground operations at any time, let alone in winter — with the war dragging on, sanctions still in place, and ongoing massive financial and military aid to Ukraine from the West, I think it will be difficult for Putin to command enough support to continue the ground war — a substantial escalation will be needed to push Ukrainian troops back.
Paul Craig Roberts wrote a number of columns strongly criticizing Putin for his restrained approach to the SMO — in the end I think he was right: Russia never allocated enough troops, and was too cautious in attacking strategic targets — the international standing and the military reputation of Russia have both been damaged, and right now it is not clear what Russia will have gained.
I guess Putin didn’t think Europe and America’s federal governments would put Ukraine above it’s own citizens and nearly ruin their “homelands” financially bankrolling Ukraine’s military. The U.S. handouts alone must have dwarfed the entirety of Russia’s entire military budget.
I’m personally against student loan forgiveness but I’d definitely rather have it than anything going to fucking Ukraine. How do courts justify no student loan forgiveness in America but allow infinite wealth transference to Ukraine oligarchs and Ukraine government loan forgiveness?
To me, the mid-terms proved the electorate is so much more retarded than I gave it credit for. Imagine if this whole Ukraine thing was a setup by Xi through blackmailing and paying off Biden to get him to ship off all of our weapons overseas to be slowly destroyed, used up, and stolen in the Ukrainian theater.
