How Far Did Rome Explore?

As I explained on X, the Greeks and Romans were not really interested in exploration for its own sake. Educated Romans believed that monsters lived on the fringes of the known world. Pliny the Elder agreed with Herodotus on this point. The Romans made it to Iceland (Ultima Thule) in the north, Ireland in the west, the Horn of Africa in the south and a Roman embassy made it to China in the east.

Note: Europeans discovered mythical lands like Hy-Brazil and Terra Australis centuries later. The Norse discovered the Azores before the Romans.

  3. Supposedly, there’s a bay in Brazil with Roman amphora all over the bottom.
Could Romans have been in Brazil in ancient times ? I think a trading or war galley could easily cross the Atlantic, given fair weather. The winds off North Africa carry ships to Brazil.
    Getting back, not so easy.

  4. You should stop using these lame AI videos, they’re unwatchable. The Romans sent people pretty far into the interior of Africa. The evidence for the Vikings in the Azores is pretty weak if you ask me: couldn’t the evidence be explained by Irish monks like St. Brendan? After all, I think if the Azores had been discovered some sort of account would have been written of it. If the population that settled there died out, it would make sense if it were monks.
