The study was part of an overall research program on longevity, studying how some animals resist infections and live longer.

Yes, one of the ways in which they were studying bat survival vis-a-vis coronaviruses was specifically by engineering an artificially augmented strain of coronavirus that would give the bats a harder time, and thus monitoring how the bats fought it.
And this strain of artificially-augmented coronavirus got accidentally released, likely due to a slip-up at the lab.
That seems the most likely sequence of events. Right now.
